SC Passing Down, Ohana

Dear SCs,

Hello! Merry Christmas =D It was a wonderfully fun and also touching sc handover the day before. I’ve got some things to share here with you (:

It was indeed a fabulous effort by the year 1-3s to put up the exciting performances for the year 4 seniors, from the yr 1 daughter skit/magic show to the yr 2 part 2 of the detective & mafia trilogy, to the yr 3 songs/award presentation. The year 4s heartfelt sharing was also a highlight of night and was very meaningful. I’m sure that the year 4s will bring away the hard skills learnt over the years like planning and executing events as well as the soft skills in interacting with others. To the year 1s to 3s all the best for the rest of your SC journey; and to the year 4s, Senior High awaits you (:

There’s also something I feel strong that I wish to speak about, which is the SC Ohana spirit, the sense of belonging to the SC family.

Here’s a little intro for the newer SCs who might not know me, I’m your SC senior Ming Quan, currently 19 years old and serving national service, and graduated from year 6 last year. I was the ahod of CR in my year in jhsc and a member of IA during shsc.

I felt real excited and happy to be coming back for the sc handover. As I entered the student lounge, I saw many familiar faces as well as the year 1s in green (who I didn’t know) running around. Haha there was a warm greeting from those sitting on the window ledge putting up the decorations (: After that, I went around saying hi. It was kind of awkward at first, because I hadn’t seen you guys for a few months already. So I walked around in circles a bit with my hands in my pocket, pondering how to say: hi & how are you. (haha I recall a couple of the year 4s sharing that night about how they still aren’t sure of themselves when saying hi & how are you too, well it takes time I guess). It was really nice of Song Shan, Joelle and Ga Jing to be so warm and welcoming, thank you! The three of them got me settled down and I begin to strike up conversations with the year 2s, and the other SCs. And once I got the ball rolling, well I felt at ease again for the rest of the night (: I even got to know a few year ones like Juilet, Zhi Chun and Ang Teng, and a few more guys and girls to who I am very sorry to I for forgetting your names :X

For those who do decide to come back to visit, perhaps you might find that you might experience the initial sense of awkwardness too. But I reassure you ‘the pain is worth the memories’ ;) It was great seeing the other seniors like Wei Jie, Liang Wei, Samuel and Kiat Shing dropping by too. I sincerely hope that in 2011 and the years to come, there will be more and more seniors keeping in touch with their juniors or even giving them relevant advice on SC. It’s really heartwarming to have things like the annual IA Christmas parties where everyone can gather back together for a reunion (:

The reason that that keeps me coming back year after year to SC is the sense of belonging to the SC family that I have. Haha I had like 5 people asking me whether I would come back for next year’s handover. The answer is definitely YES! As long as I can book out of army, it’s certainly going to be my top priority for that day! (: Some of you also might remember me mentioning about the sc alumni during last year’s handover, and you might have done a survey regarding the sc alumni too. Well work’s still in progress, and it’s certainly going to take time.

I feel that SC provides you with a safe and friendly environment to grow and develop your leadership qualities and yourself. It’s also a place where there’s lots of openness and trust. It’s certainly not everywhere you can find 80 people so bonded, and have people sharing their heartfelt feelings, with even some bursting into tears. Don’t take it for granted and do treasure this!

Here, I end this post with 3 challenges to the year 4s of the present and future: One, to stay in touch with those few good friends in SC that you get along exceptionally well with; Two; to stay in touch with your level mates in SC once in a while; Three: to stay in touch with those seniors and juniors in SC that are close to you.

It might take a little effort, but I assure you that the rewards you reap would be manyfold. That’s all for now, take care and see you sooooon! :)

IA Orientation 2010

Hey SCs!

Yesterday was the awesome IA Orientation 2010. It was awesome fun as we played really fun games, cleaned up SC Room which is in an awesome state now, you guys will see it soon ;D. We labelled the blazers, watched Incredible Tales together and had loads of fun. The department bonded and everybody worked together as a team.

It was an unforgettable experience, counting rubberbands, straws and many more haha. Pictures are up on facebook, do take a look ;) Many thanks to those who attended, and the presidentials as well. IA has definitely bonded together :))

Anyway here're some details for our year end SC trip :)

Date: 30 OCT (Saturday) - 4 NOV (Thursday)
We're going to... BATAM! :D by boat, spend 3D2N there helping out in orphanages, teaching them how to brush their teeth: hygiene is really poor over at Batam :( and perhaps bring a little smile to a new friend :) After that we'll most probably ~~swim~~ take a boat back from Batam and take a coach to MALAYSIA for a waterfall trek! Filled with adventure and challenges, we're sure to bond hoho! :D

Cost of whole trip is around $600
You may use your IF funds if applicable and also the newly introduced SC fund :)

I am running for EXCO because as mentioned, I really do want to give back to SC and the school. I also want to join EXCO to challenge myself to constantly upgrade in becoming a better leader, or more aptly, “Breakthrough”.

Currently, SW is quite a new department. Hence, I would like to leave some of our new projects, such as our CCA Calendar, alone. However, some new ideas I want to implement include bringing back school-wide Movie Marathons to promote school bonding, and a whole new wave of publicity for each SW sub-department! This will include a Facebook Page for Student Initiatives, an email informing the school about Feedback’s new and improved Email System, and morning announcements by members of CCA sub-department at the start of each CCA’s tournaments, concerts etc.

I can have fun, I can be hyper; but beneath all that enthusiasm, I can safely say I have grown over the past two years. I feel what gives me an edge for EXCO is that I possess good interpersonal skills, have the passion for SC, can manage my school commitments well, can be friendly yet serious, and am ready for the responsibilities that will come my way, if I make it into EXCO. Hence, I hope all of you will give me the chance to let my visions for SC as mentioned in my campaign, come true! Vote for me, and let me show you what I’ve got! Thank you!

Yap Wei Lee - Running for IA HOD

I am running for the position of IA HOD. To be able to lead, one must be able to serve; and to be able to serve, one must be able to care. So, when do we care about SC? It is when we love SC sincerely, thus bringing ourselves to be committed. When we are committed to it, we will do our best to bring good results. Therefore, I want to take up the role of IA HOD because I want to propose new ideas to bond the Council family and make everyone feel part of the big family.

As for qualities, I will skip the part about being responsible etc because I feel that everyone in SC possess those qualities as well. However, I think that what makes me stand out is my ability to relate to people. I think that this is a very useful ‘tool’ in terms of leadership because after all, it is very important to know and understand the people you are working with. One thing I can promise is that I will make an effort to interact with my juniors and not make them feel inferior in the council. I believe that it is possible to regain the ‘ohana’ spirit if every one of us put in effort.

Lastly, I will like to assure everyone that I am committed to SC and will do my best in everything J

This year is special, as Jinyu is running for IA HOD. (remember the chicken?)

I am sure many of you joined SC as it was fun and you also wanted to serve the school. But in order to take care of the school, we need to first take care of ourselves! IA makes SC a fun and memorable experience. IA also ensures that all SC events can get their logistics! So now you know how important IA is.

Other than that, IA must also function as a group to handle SC’s internal affairs. Furthermore, SC is not an individual commitment. SC is about teamwork!

Most importantly, you need someone who is fun-loving, positive and able to handle SC and schoolwork to lead the important IA.

So if you believe that I can take up this job, vote Jinyu, for IA HOD!

Rebecca Han - Running for IA HOD

To SC: I’m Rebecca running for IA HOD. Basically my plans for SC revolve not only around family-like bonding, but also that of team spirit. I hope to create a culture where every one of us strives to give our best for SC because we are a team, we don’t want to let our teammates down and also a family-like atmosphere where we can go to each other for emotional support. Some tangible plans of mine would be one-to-one mentoring by seniors and level bonding, because different levels have different common topics. Of course, more SC outings will be organized and I’m definitely open to more ideas on how to bond SC together better.

I really hope to use the skills SC has equipped me with to give back to SC. I sincerely hope to create a closer Council, where in the midst of our professionalism, we laugh and cry together. Council has taught me to care; given me opportunities to serve; now I hope to be able to lead. Vote me for IA HOD and together, we will create a better Council in 2010/2011!

Phua Ying Jia - Running for IA HOD

Hello everyone.
Yingjia from 3K running for IA HOD.

I joined SC this year. I do take every chance to hone my skills as a leader or even as just a mere human being, to attend workshops or conventions. I am a person who speaks fewer words, who thinks more and is more observant I guess. But, I guess wise words come by rare, right?:) I like encouraging because it comes a long way.

I view IA as a pillar of support for all SCs. For amateurs like me, IA serves as a platform which enables us to adapt into council life as soon as possible. For ‘older’ people, IA is a place where SCs from different levels come together and bond for them to lead the school together, united. Of course it would mean to take charge of blazers and SC room as well.

Propose bonding within departments itself first through frequent outings, camps or updates on what the department has done so that no one would feel left out. Birthday bashes on a monthly basis to make one seem more special on that special day. Perhaps we can have inter-department competitions in sports etc. as well.

Running for EXCO is to serve the school and give back to the council who has given me many opportunities to broaden my experience as a person. Besides, these opportunities do not come cheap. Another is my passion to lead and to serve and of course to care.

Vote for me as I believe I can bring you soar to greater heights together with the whole of SC! Fun loving, enthusiastic and sometimes you call ‘zi high’; I am passionate about the wellbeing of the every council member as well as our direction as a council as a whole. I have faith in my ability to cope well with my other commitments, and my vision that we as a council can be closely-knitted J I am passionate about serving for the council as well as the school as I strive for improvement by encouragement and inspiration. I hope that I can inspire the SCs just like how my seniors have inspired me to strive for excellence and run for EXCO. Besides my cheerful side, I am committed and dedicated to perform tasks to the best of my ability. Of course, what’s greater than working and planning optimistically and energized? :D

I am running for IA HOD as I feel that I am more familiar and interested in managing the council’s internal affairs. I want to make a difference in every SC’s lives as we motivate and help each other, taking the initiative to interact and bond with our buddies J As an individual amongst a bunch of promising leaders, I believe that all EXCO members should have a concerted effort with a vision to bring the council to greater heights, and have the passion to serve and lead. Regina - Running for SW HOD

Why am I running for Exco? Firstly, my main motivation for joining SC was because of a sense of belonging to Dunman High School cultivated in me by the presence of a strong Dunmanian family spirit and thus, after my first year, I felt like I wanted to give back to the school. Linking it back to the campaign, I believe that being in Exco will entail more responsibilities which allow me to serve the school on a larger platform.

Secondly, being in Student Council has been great for me! However, more than just being a bonded group of enthusiastic people, we are considered an organisation which entails a certain level of professionalism. Being a young Council, we are still trying to balance these two identities. Thus, I would like to play a part in moulding our Council identity and forging a stronger Ohana spirit.

Lastly, I believe that being in the Exco will allow me to grow as a person in terms of leaderships skills. I believe that these will not only enrich my experience in Dunman High and land me in good stead for the working world but also, this growth will help me to serve the school more effectively.

Personally, I feel that I am more inclined to being spontaneous and coming up with ideas that would improve the school and Council experience. I also have the heart and am committed to serve the school and the Student Council so I HOPE YOU WILL VOTE FOR ME! :D

Lovell – Running for SW HOD

Being the first department I joined, SW has made a huge impact on my life in SC. Even though it has changed tremendously, I believe that SW still continues to play a large role in the lives of many.

Firstly, I would propose a mass SW meeting at the start of every school term. During this time, the sub-departments can share with each other their plans for the term and also make us of the chance to bond. With a common goal in mind and a strong sense of cohesion, SW can work its way towards greater heights.

Also, I feel that the department should be more responsive to the students’ needs. I suggest setting up a mini-version of speaker’s corner, where anyone is free to come up to voice their opinion on any matter. Also, students can be offered an online platform to share their views. Hopefully, feedback from the student body can be gathered more easily, allowing the department to work on improving school life for everyone.

Lastly, I feel that all CCAs should be given fair coverage, thus I propose a CCA appreciation week, when students would be given a chance to experience what it is like to be part of another CCA. This would allow students to know more about each other and the different CCAs, thus promoting bonding between CCAs and students.

Mr Tan Tui Gee once told us, 在一个旅行中，有三种人。第一种是让旅行变得更好的人；第二种是对旅行没有差别的人；而第三种是让旅行变得不愉快的人。I hope to become the first kind of person, and make YOUR life in SC a better and more meaningful one.

Lim Xinyi – Running for CR HOD

Hi everyone. I am Lim Xin Yi from 3L and I am running for the position of CR HOD. The reason why I want to join the executive committee is because I want to be a senior which my juniors can look up to. I want to be able to inspire my juniors and lead a department with so much care, making my junior’s and my fellow student councilor’s time in SC a most memorable and fun experience. Thus I hope to be given a chance to prove myself and do the best for the council.
The reason why I choose to run for the position of CR HOD is because I have the interest and passion of working with other people. Being able to work with others from different school or even different countries is an interesting and never to be missed opportunity. Dunman high has given me so much up till now and it is my duty and responsibility to give back to the school. Thus I hope to tell the world through working with others just how great Dunman high is. Being able to “brag” about my school is my pride and honor.
So why should you guys vote for me as an Exco member? I believe that all the year 3 SCs who are running for the various positions all have an enormous amount of passion for the council and they are all very eager to serve the school. So I believe that only thing that sets me apart from the rest is my personality. I am the type of person who is very committed to my work. I may not be the fastest or the best, but I am the one who will give my all, give my best. I will not give up, I will try my best.

Felicia Goh – Running for CR HOD

HELLOOOOO! :D I’m Felicia from 3M, and I am running for CR HOD.

SC has given me many chances to participate in different events and activities, be it in facilitating orientation, or going for other school’s investitures. And through all these fun activities, SC has shaped me into who I am today. Being in the EXCO allows me to make greater and more impactful contributions and changes, in a way, to take a step forward to thank SC for turning me into who I am today. On top of that, I want to be more actively involved in something that I truly enjoy: serving the school through these things that we do, especially school tours, which is why I chose to take up CR HOD.

Why, of all people, me? I feel that what’s really important is: PASSION. I really do enjoy doing things, not only for the school, but also for the Council, and also, going for school tours and I wish to do even more than just that, and thus, I AM HERE. I am willing to accept constructive criticisms, because that is how we can truly improve ourselves. I am able to interact with people well and can be a very fun and crazy person to be with, but when it comes to work, I would be serious, which I feel, is essential to being a good leader!

Hi guys, here’s a brief outline: I am enthusiastic and positive minded. I like stretching my limits and boundaries and love to challenge myself, looking for loopholes and problems in an event or situation and solving them head-on. I am a little of perfectionist where I like things done awesomely!!!! I am a team player and I’ll love to be able to work with you guys :D Though I’m also sometimes work-oriented and procrastinate, I’m sure I’ll be able to change that :D I have a vision for SC: REACHOUT. As role models, we care, serve and lead. But I feel that we dare not speak out, dare not influence openly. As leaders, we should step out and be influential, and reach out to the student body. Thus, my vision for student council: REACHOUT. I feel that we should let the student body know that we are there for them, that we want to serve and care for them, and that we are there to lead them with a burning passion. I hope we’ll be more influential and go to ground level of students so that we can better serve, care and lead them with OUR BURNING PASSION!!!!!! YAY!!! With this vision, I would like to lead the student council to greater heights, wider horizons and deeper depths. Student council has done much for me, molding me into what I am today and taught me much. I’ve learnt a lot from her and she has given me much, and now, it’s time to give back. He Jing Pei – Running for Vice President

Hi thank you for giving me the opportunity to share what I have in mind. My name is He Jing Pei, I am running for Vice President position. Personally I felt that SC has really given me a lot of opportunities to learn in my two and a half year in the council. It allowed me to serve the school by planning events. Through the process of planning, it also equipped me with many training workshops which further enhanced my strength and let me realized what my weaknesses are. I am really grateful to what the council has provided me with and right now I think it is the time I should do something to repay the council.

Let me briefly introduce about myself. I am a quite optimistic and easy-going person. Sometimes when I encounter problem which is difficult to solve, I will tend to look at it as a learning experience as since it is inevitable, why not we just try to accept and learn from it? I think as an EXCO, there are times we will make mistakes and being optimistic will help us to recover faster. Being an easy-going person can help me to communicate with people from different areas. This can help me and work with my seniors and juniors better if I have the chance to become a VP. I have chosen to campaign for Vice President, I will definitely to put in my utmost effort in it. Lastly, I seriously hope that I will have the chance to serve the council as a V.P. Thank you.------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Venus Tan – Running for Vice President

Venus is usually associated with fire and probably anger but I am on the contrary a calm and collected person. I am able to regain my composure quickly. This is one of my leadership qualities because when we meet nerve-wrecking situations which require quick choice-making of important decisions, we must be able to remain calm so that we can think rationally.

Why should you vote for me? Why am I the right choice for this position? I feel that the reason is simple and that is because I really want to serve the council. I have benefited much from the 3 years spent in council, with the council teachers organizing various camps, the school subsidizing for workshops and the invaluable mentoring advices from my seniors. Thus, I feel that I am now equipped with the leadership skills and a more mature mindset to step up to the role of vice-president. I really want to give back to the council what I have learnt from these 3 years and use these to lead her to greater heights. I don’t want all these to go to waste. Thus, I feel that the best platform for me to give back, is to give back my time and that is to join the exco and lead the council. If I am voted as vice-president, I hope to drive the council in making her a more fitting puzzle piece in the student body. I think the key to this is to work together with them.

Jia Song Shan – Running for President

I want to serve. The school has given me many opportunities in terms of building myself as a person of values and characters, the council has also given me the chance to know the world, to open my views and most important of all, to learn what it takes to be a leader. I want to do my best to serve the school and the council in return, even if it is of a very little task, I would be spending the maximum effort, and being part of the EXCO is a very good and useful platform to achieve my goals. To be able to help the council and the school would be very privileged and honoured, and I want to take up this chance to participate actively in the building of the school and the council. Besides serving the school and council, I believe that being an EXCO member will prepare me for greater things in life and equip me with the leadership skills I need for the future, and it will be an experience of a lifetime for which I will not want to forget and will not be able to forget.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you cannot attend the camp ON ALL 3 FULL DAYS, here's what you should do:

- Email Mrs Low & Hong lao shi, and CC. Creshelle & your dept head to
apply leave
- Include in the email when you are unable to make it (from what
time till what time you will be leaving, or which day you cannot make it etc)
- Also include your reasons for being unable to attend the camp at any point
- If possible, attach a form from your programme/parent's letter/ any
document for the teachers to refer to

NOTE: Leave application is subjected to approval by the teachers as the camp is compulsory yeah :) Apply for leave only if you have a majorly valid reason!

Really sorry for the delay for the issuing of blazers. As quite a substantial number of people do not have their blazer/bottoms, it would cost a lot to make and would take 4-6 weeks to be done. Hello dearies!

you guys should still enjoying yourselves at camp but i had to go as i had something on :( sigh, didn't get to see all of you playing yourselves silly at the surprise night activity! really wanted to say a few words before you guys head off to the land of thousand smiles, but i guess i'd just have to do it here!

well i must say, having gone through many generations of councillors, something has remained constant and consistent. the faces have changed, namelists have changed even departments have merged, but one thing remains - OHANA.

the new year 1s might not know what ohana is so lemme just briefly explain this phenomenal spirit that stays in the hearts of all councillors. OHANA basically encompasses "Family" and OHAHA means that no one gets left behind.

that's what we all believe, and guard with our hearts in council- OHANA. this spirit of family has been there since I myself was in year 1 and it's still there. some of you seniors might feel that OHANA is less prominent than it was since the days of the good'old Kuala Lipis where we all slept like 4 hours a day, but i'm telling you, it's still here, and it'll never go away.

the OHANA spirit may be less obvious, but it stays strong! so i'm posing all you councillors a challenge, re-ignite this special bonding, this special feel that we share distinctly as a family through the upcoming Chiangmai trip. I want all of you to display the spirit of OHANA, and give it your best shot in everything you do, for the sake of the family!

throughout the trip, ensure that nobody is left out, ensure that everyone has fun. When cheering, shout your lungs out, when laughing, laugh your hearts out and create memories you'll treasure for the lifetime to come! many of you have said you missed kuala lipis, so what's so fantastic about it that makes all of you want to relive it? it's the spirit that we all felt. the kind of "happiness" leaping in our hearts when we re-heard the cheers we did, the smiles that came when we thought about Lula, Eke, Aeldra and Dyaruu. and the many happy thoughts that surface when we think Suefla and Coewa.

and i want all of you to experience kuala lipis over again, and make it even better with this Chiangmai trip. As you go through the terrains of the wild, i want you guys to help one another, because little gestures like this strengthens the family, it enhances OHANA. When you interact with the locals, i want you to INSPIRE and TOUCH them, let THEM feel ohana. In this way, council becomes more than a family, it is a family with spirit, a family that inspires and gives hope!

and i assure you, chiangmai would be a trip that you talk about while jumping for joy, one that you speak of to your other friends with pride and make them envious and want to be part of the council, part of something special, part of OHANA.

and i see the potential in everyone of you to make this happen! so rmr my challenge, create OHANA, feel it, remember it and spread it. OHANA- no one gets left behind. remember, council = family and in a family, no one quits. council is more than just planning events, more than just leading, council is about inspiring through leadership. and that cannot be done by A councillor, it has to be done by THE council (: and OHANA is definitely step 1. so through this chiangmai trip, find back that OHANA, and create a council that is ready to take dunman by storm in 2010! :D

have fun darlings, wished i could join in and add on to my already thick book of "SC days" but A levels PW doesn't allow it, so have fun and cover my share of fun too! i can cheer really loudly overseas so make sure you make up for that too (:

Order of Council Photos

Hey guys! The SC photos we took the other day are out and in my hands! In view of the upcoming exams, we will not be passing these photos around for ordering. Instead, i will be in the canteen every morning from about 730am onwards this whole week. I will be at the tables near the photocopy machines.

So if you want to have a look at the photos and order them, bring along your money and order on the spot! We have long photos and short photos. The long ones are at 3 bucks each while the short ones are at the usual 2 dollars. I will need to submit the order form by this Friday so anyone who do not order by Thursday morning will not get the photos!

HEY SCs!
here are some updates regarding overseas trip this november.
the dates are not yet to be confirmed but set aside 11th of november to 18th of november.
there are 2 options, DESARU and CHIANGMAI(edit) previously i told you that the cost $280 and $950 respectively.
heres the good news, after checking with the school... it has been confirmed that they will subsidise 80% of the cost! that means you will only need to pay $190 if you want to go to chiangmai! :D
both places has its pros and cons, but things done in desaru also can be done in singapore yea?
on the other hand, chiang mai provides us all with a whole new range of experiences and perspectives that we cannot find locally.
so hope you guys will decide wisely but ultimately it will still be put to a vote.

Hi Year 4 and 3 Councilors,Congratulations to the current batch of Year 4s for stepping down from JHSC today! Pardon me for realizing just today that your handover ceremony was to be held this afternoon since most of us SHSCs were only informed of it last night.

On this special occasion, I do have something to say to all of you. Didn’t really get to share it earlier though because I was hopping from place to place attending different activities.

It is true that time flies. Seems like yesterday when I was still having a camp with your in Kuala Lipis. Junior High days were so much more carefree if you were to compare with Senior High’s (that’s why you shouldn’t complain that you have many many tests now because it is going to get worse in Year 5! :p). But as much as I hoped that things will stay the same, the more they changed. Today, as I listened to the Year 4s speaking out in front of the juniors, I do feel a little sad for you now that you are stepping down from an organization where you have spent a huge part of your last 3 to 4 years in, forging special bonds and picking up new skills.

But even so, as I see that you have grown to become the person who have cared more, served more and led others in ways you know best, change makes us look back on our own development and then you will see whether you have turned out for the better. Perhaps, the question you should be asking yourself right now is, am I able to handle and to be TRUSTED with more responsibility than before after joining the Council? If there is one distinct learning point about being a Student Councilor is that you have to be ready and responsible enough before you are granted an opportunity to lead. Truly to whom much is given, much is expected.

Trailing off from that statement, I really wish to thank first and foremost the 0809 EXCO members for showing us back during your interview that you are worthy enough for the Council to be entrusted within your hands. To the non-EXCO members, you undoubtedly have contributed to the Council’s current level of performance too. All year 4s, if you feel that you have done extraordinarily, keep it up! If you feel that your efforts did not produce as much good results but you really tried your best in everything that you are tasked with, then you deserve an equally loud applause.

Enough being said to the Year 4s already. To the current batch of Year 3s, it’s all up to you how you continue the legacy and fulfilling unfulfilled wishes left by your seniors. Congratulations to those who made it into EXCO as well. Remember that you are now given much, and you are expected just as much.

I feel compelled to send this email out to your because I want to wish you in becoming better people just as you have shaped me to be a better person back in my days as a JHSC. I wouldn't have grown if there is no one to sharpen my skills against. And for that I thank you once again. You will always be the dear year 2s and year 3s of my batch.

I apologize if this email sounded longer than I had expected it to be. Just keep in mind that regardless whether we are now starting on a new chapter or finishing the last few pages of a book, in life there are still many hills of challenges to surmount, many windows of opportunities to open, and many lives of people you can make a huge impact to.

MANPOWER NEEDED!

Hey SCs! I need about 15-20 of you to help in ushering service for the SYF CO performance at ESPLANADE (!!) on 30th July from 5pm- 10pm.

It's not everyday that you can have fun with your fellow SCs all night, all the way to 10pm! Also, it's probably the once-in-you-sc-lifetime that you get to do duty at ESPLANADE! so do volunteer for this! (:

The attire would be full investiture attire (so that you guys look super smart for the pretty esplanade set up!) and dinner will be provided! :D

Hello dearies!

Haven't seen most of you guys since EONS ago with H1N1 and what not!

anyway, hope you guys had a fruitful holiday, one that was enjoyed and one that recharged my lovable juniors into their energetic selves! (:

I'm sure most of you know that voting for EXCO 0910 is coming up real soon! so i just wanna drop some reminders, pointers and words of (hopefully) wisdom xD so here goes!

thanks to your efficient current EXCO, the highlights of the campaign are now all on this blog and you can scrutinize or just take a look (in the very least) at what the candidates' have got to say. You might want to keep in mind innovative ideas, warm notions and especially, signs of leadership abilities while going through the "summaries"

and also do remember that you're not merely voting for your future PVPs, or HODs, you're voting for the council's future. the 9 people you're voting in will be those who lead the council into an exciting 2010!

do also be responsible voters. The art of voting lies in that the system believes and trust in the people who vote and i'm sure all of you guys know what true leaders are made out of. So do vote wisely, give it some thought before you pen down your choices (:

lastly, whatever the outcome might be, i hope that you guys would support the new EXCO and trust that they have been chosen because they are recognized to be those who can bring SC to that next phase and continue this legacy filled with passion and love!

Ada and Yiting (Running for IA HOD and AHOD)

Hi SC! This is Yi Ting from 3K and Ada from 3M. We are running for the positions of IA HOD and AHOD respectively.
Yi Ting should be the HOD of IA as she’s a good decision maker. She handed events such as PSLTC where she’s the AIC. She is passionate to bond SC together and has strong goals for both IA and SC which she is determine to achieve. She’s more experience in SC and she doesn’t give up easily when faced with obstacles.
Ada should be the AHOD of IA as she has experience with being a treasurer. She is passionate about serving the council, and is able to solve internal conflicts well. She is innovative and has many ideas to bond and improve SC. As she is newer to SC, she is more adaptable to changes.
Most importantly, both of us can manage our time well. Yi Ting is involved in NSC, BSP and DTSA, and Ada is involved in DHRPSMP and CMP. We are responsible and organize, thus we can take care of the SC room well. We work together well and have experience working together countless times, e.g. we took the same year one class for orientation. Our strengths complement each other, therefore we have double power.
We are both confident that we can make SC more bonded, and bring out an even stronger ohana spirit. We share a strong belief that we will carry out everything as we planned as much as possible and create the platform between all SCs, and also form a bridge where all SCs can work together happily.
If you vote for us, we are sure we will make IA and SC a place full of fun and laughter!

Cassandra (Running for SW AHOD)

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share what i have in mind for the new SW department.
I have been thinking of a new organizational structure to split the department into 4, each representing a level.
From there, a rep from each level will get together to act on a specific task for example gathering feedback.

Different levels will need different methods of engaging them, although on a same task.
Therefore being flexible and reacting accordingly to specific levels is an efficient way to meet their needs.
This will also allow interaction between the council, thereby fostering better understanding.

With the experience of being a sports leader, i believe that i have the ability to better coordinate and liase with other cca leaders for activity planning. Also, i will know their competitions beforehand so that we update the school with the most recent results.

I feel with my good listening skills which translate into understanding of student’s needs, and great tenacity to complete my task and strong determination to see my ideas being implemented, I am well suited for the role of AHOD of SW.

Therefore i believe that being in the exco will provide me with the privilege and the required authority to garner the members to work together.

Charlotte (Running for CR AHOD)

Dear SCs, I am Choo Hui Min Charlotte from Class 3B, and my CCA is St John. In this year’s EXCO campaign, I am running for the position of Corporate Relations Assistant Head-of-Department.

Wanting to care, to serve, and to lead, I believe that I have the capabilities of an EXCO member, which would allow me to contribute more back to the council as well as the school. For example, as an CR AHOD, I aim to give SCs equal opportunities to develop themselves such as allowing each and everyone to attend symposiums as well as to make morning announcements. These small efforts will hence go a long mile by allowing SCs to gain more exposure and confidence. Furthermore, I will also ensure, to the best of my ability, that school tours for guests, will run smoothly. This is given my meticulous nature whereby I consider possible loopholes and also explore further improvements.

Last but not least, thank you for giving me this opportunity for this sharing.

Fabian (Running for IA HOD/AHOD)

Hi! I am Fabian Kang of class 3K. I am campaigning for the post of Internal Affairs AHOD/HOD. I am sure most of you have heard of the attitude = 100% (a=1,b=2,c=3….etc and you add up all the letters). I was bored so I went to discover that Dunman High = 99%. There always seems to be a 1% room for improvement, and that is what student council is for, to bring the change to fill up that gap. I want to be in exco so that I can achieve SC’s goals to be the bridge between school and student body and to improve the school as well. I am aiming for the IA AHOD/HOD post because I am in this department and I understand its job scope better. We are all part of that 1% of change, and I want to bring further, so Vote – For – Me! Thank You.

Gordon (Running for CR HOD)

Hi everyone, I am campaigning for the position of corporate relations HOD or a/HOD. CR makes me have the chance to interact with other students though school tours. Why choose CR? Personally, I love interacting and make friends with other people. Hence CR gives me the opportunity to work and at the same time interact. Being in EXCO, means that I will work together with the other EXCO members not only to bring CR department to greater heights, but also bringing the whole council to greater heights. As a department, I hope to bring more fun and bonding between the CR members by organizing outings that we decide as a department. On top of that, I will be very open to suggestions and feedbacks to help improve anything with regards to CR. Therefore, being passionate and committed, I hope to bring SC and CR to a whole new level.

Grace (Running for SW HOD/AHOD)

Hi, I am Grace Tung from 3J, running for Student Welfare HOD/AHOD. I would describe myself as an easy-going person, and I am able to relate and work well with my peers. I may not be a very loud person, but I am confident that I would be determined enough to overcome the challenges that I may face as I take on the role of this post.

Student Welfare is a very important part of SC, as SW is the main bridge between the student body and the council. I am running for this post because I feel that it is important to cultivate a strong Dunmanian spirit and a stronger sense of belonging in our school, and I will aim towards that if I were given the chance to. I aspire to build a strong Student Welfare department, so as to forge a stronger bond between SC and the student population, as well as build stronger bond throughout the school – teachers and students alike. Although this might take time, and probably generations of students, we’ve all got to start somewhere. Wye Inn (3H) and I will be campaigning as a pair for the positions of HOD and AHOD. We are confident of working together to ignite the starting flame towards a stronger Dunmanian spirit.

Vote us for Student Welfare, and let’s all work together to bring out the true Dunmanian spirit in all of us!

Jia Xin (Running for IA HOD)

Hello SCs! I’m campaigning for the position of IA-HOD this year. I really hope that you will vote for me because I have some interesting activities planned for you guys! As we all know that SCs need to be more bonded, therefore the IA department can plan activities such as games and monthly birthday bash to be carried out during some SC meetings on Wednesday in order to bond us together. Who says general meetings are boring?

SCs can also be randomly grouped in each month and complete the “task of the month” together, eg. Presenting a humorous skit. After the “task of the month” has been completed, they will be randomly grouped again for their next task. In this way, SCs can step out of their comfort zone and bond with more people when doing the task as a group. Aren’t you just excited to know what your next task and next grouping will be? Also, I think that SC outings and chalets are a good way to bond us together so we shall all turn up for the future outings ok?

Also, I believed that I will do a great job as an IA-HOD as I really found my passion in serving the school and council, especially during the open house and Year one orientation. I will also uphold the good image of the school and the student council by keeping myself neat and tidy at all times. I’m also able to give others a listening ear when they need someone to talk to, so you all can approach me anytime when you have troubles.

Thus, if you want your life as a Student Council to be an exciting and fulfilling one, or if you want SCs to be more bonded than before, please vote for me as your IA-HOD so that it will provide me a better position to propose all the interesting ideas!

Shanisca (Running for Vice President)

Since I’ve stepped into SC, I have been involved in many sc activities. Many of the events I’ve been involved in such as the new-intake orientation this year and PSLTC last year, I’ve demonstrated the required strength and ability to organize and handle such events. I deserve a vote because I believe being the VP requires one that goes beyond this and I strongly believe that I’m up to the challenge. With my strong interpersonal and organizational skill, I’ll be able to gel different departments to work together in achieving a common goal for the SC. With my strong analytical mindset, I’m able to chart directions for the SC and student body. If I’m elected as the VP, I’m able to create a strong bond within the SC body and among the exco and non-exco members with my enthusiastic spirit. I’ll also provide the councilors a “venue” to voice out their opinions so as to bring greater cohesiveness among the SC body. Last but not least, to bring the council to greater heights. Vote me as your Vice-president!

Sheena (Running for CR HOD)

As Dunman High School is a well-known school with a good reputation, it is common for us to receive external visitors or students and teachers from overseas. Therefore, this implies that there is a crucial need to develop the corporate relations department. I hope that people would really consider placing their vote on me, because although being the Head of Department is not really necessary for me to carry out my plans and goals, it is a more easier and effective way of bringing about changes to the department such that its members would find that their experience there for the year is meaningful to them.

Terence (Running for IA HOD)

I’m Terence Tan from 3I, and just a little background information about me, I’m from NPCC, and I was from IA, but I’m currently in SW. The post I’m running for is IA HOD. Firstly I will start with my strengths, I am actually very optimistic, for those of you who know me well. I can stay very optimistic at the worst situations, and I’m also able to think on the spot and make decisions quickly when problems arise. As I was in IA before, I am able to understand the job scope of IA. If I am the IA HOD, I would ensure that there would be the family feeling in SC, and family means nobody gets left behind. If an organization is unable to work comfortably with each other, it would be pointless for it to do anything. Therefore, we need to bond the council together, to ensure that what we do is efficient and the best. I would plan more outings and also propose games during Wednesday meetings to allow seniors and juniors to get to know each other better, so that they can work better with each other. I also would try to mix juniors and seniors together for activities, so that there would not be just year 2s sticking together, but maybe a mix of different levels, to ensure everybody knows each other better.

Teo Ting Wei (Running for SW HOD)

Hi SCs! I am running for SW and here are some of the ideas I would like to implement! My vision is consistency and conviction to whatever ideas that we propose! Some ideas I have include a regularly updated feedback corner, updated CCA board, and CIP opportunities for all school body alike to participate. This not only allows inter-levels to work together as well forge closer ties with the SCs, which is what we want to accomplish.

SW requires lots of time and dedication to review new proposals and ideas, and to stand up and remain firm and convicted with our proposals and suggestions. And I believe I have the drive, the commitment and the time to accomplish all that to the best of my abilities! J

Please vote for me give me the chance to take the 1st step. I might not be able to make a big change, but please allow me to take this first step with a new vision and action plan for SW and for the next batches to continue with the vision!

Vivian (Running for Vice President):

I deserve a vote because I truly have a passion for leadership and I’m willing to learn to improve any flaws I may have. I believe I can be serious, capable and fun loving at the same time, as I’m an enthusiast who will infect council with my indomitable and cheerful free spirit. During the campaign, I mentioned I had good intrapersonal skills, and as you will find out, I have good intrapersonal skills as well. I trust that I can serve council in the capacity of an exco member, strengthening bonds within the council, implementing new changes (as mentioned in my earlier campaign) and making your life in council a better one as well! I have faith in my ability to cope with council as well as my other commitments and all of you can look forward to more fun and laughter, love and joy! Wye Inn (Running for SW)

I believe that given my past experiences in both departments of SW and LC, I’m familiar with how both system works. After it has merged, I would be able to work on it and further improve the big department. My main goal is to widen SC’s comfort zone and really reach into the student body and help them instead of simply organizing events. Student council needs to take initiative to connect with students and understand their needs so that in future the students will change their perspective and see SC as a helping hand. I’m confident that if I’m voted, I will lead the department towards this and accomplish it in near future. As a leader, I possess the necessary communication skills as well as the interpersonal skills. This certainly will come in useful when I work with the fellow SCs as well as the student body thus helping to close the gaps between us and working more efficiently. As you all know, AYG celebration has been scaled down. Thus, only JH staff and JHSC will be needed to be present.

Involvment as follow:

The rest will be involved as the final lap cheering party.
-Basically what you need to do is to form 2 rows along the final lap where Mr Sng will be running and to cheer him on.

All of you will still need to report to school at 8am on Mon for lessons.
Gather at parade square at 3.30pm for a quick briefing and run through by Mr Chew. 1st run of rehearsal was planned to take place at around 4.45pm. The official celebration will take place at about 5.30 - 5.45pm and will end at about 6pm plus.

Attire is school PE tee and pants/skirts/shorts/PE shorts.

Attendance is compulsory.

I really really enjoyed myself there with you guys, and really got to know some of you a real lot better.

In summary, we had an uber eventful bus ride to the invigorating city of suntec, whereby we ventured beyond the fountain of wealth till we arrived at our blooming destination, Just Acia eatery.

There and then, we exploited the free flow of ice-cream, coffee, and beverages.

Hi dearest JHSCs!

just wanna say all the best for tomorrow's sports day event! i won't be able to be there cheering and sweating it out with all of you tmr as i have to attend the career day for senior high students, but i want to give all of you my support! :)

i can see that a lot of hard work and effort has been put into planning this and i'm sure all you SCs will do the council family proud tmr! i was particularly impressed with the cheers put up around the school which really helps the Dunmanian familiarize themselves with the competition cheer! a really good initiative!

so for tmr, do give it your 202% and do your best! i believe the planning committee has put in hours of effort just to ensure everything runs well and all the they need now is the help & support from all you SCs! so cheer your lungs out tmr, keep the megawatt smiles on and just do the school proud!

the students may not be responsive but i really do hope all of you can stay optimistic and upbeat. first time, they may not respond, 2nd time, they get mildly impressed with your energy, 3rd time they wonder how you stay positive and determined to get them cheering and by the 4th time, they'd probably give in and cheer alongside with you, influenced by your enthusiasm! so don't get beaten if they dont seem enthusiastic at first but instead, continue smiling, cheering and put across the message that since the school representatives are going all out to win glory for our school, we should really be cheering them on in the name of the "Dunmanian spirit"!

do have a good sleep tonight and rest well! don't forget to drink lots of water, bring lots of water and keep some lozenges by your side (you may need it!) here's wishing the planning committee as well as all JHSCs all the best for tmr! (: i'll be rooting for all of you! & remember, winning the cheering competition is secondary, what is important is that we carry out our duties with integrity and honorably and feel proud to be part of the SC family. and of course, don't forget to have fun while doing so! :D
